 Sustainable development

What do we mean by sustainable development?

According to UNESCO (2022), the concept of sustainable development was described by the 1987 Bruntland Commission Report as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

What are the pillars of sustainable development?

(Research Gate, 2022)

🤝Social pillar

The social pillar focuses on sustaining principles such as fairness and individual rights. It is based on the following guidelines:

  • Prevent social exclusion and discrimination by promoting gender equality, closing the salary gap between men and women, and implementing global social rights, among other things.
  • Promote solidarity by partnering with local and international organizations and programs to decrease social inequalities and ensure a fair wage for farmers.
  • Contribute to stakeholders' well-being

💲Economic pillar

The ability to establish a responsible economic system is the economic pillar. Its goal is to support and promote environmental conservation by lowering production risks. As a result, product recycling and the use of renewable raw materials are critical features of the economic pillar.

🌱 Environmental pillar

(BBVA, 2022)
The environmental pillar is built on a commitment to protect the environment by lowering risks and assessing the environmental implications of companies' actions. The following are the issues that companies need to consider in this area:

  • Save and preserve natural resources;
  • assess their carbon footprint and reduce their GHG emissions to improve it;
  • reduce and better manage their waste.
                                                                                                                            (BBVA, 2022)

Examples of sustainable development practices:

1. Conserve energy.
You may assist to minimize carbon emissions by using less energy. Switching off inactive appliances, turning down the heat, and hanging clothing to dry instead of using the dryer are just a few methods to save energy at home.

2-Use reusable alternatives.
 plastic frequently winds up in landfills and the ocean, posing a threat to wildlife and the environment. Avoid this by looking for reusable and environmentally friendly alternatives.

3-Reuse and recycle
Put your trash in the appropriate bins to ensure you're recycling. To reduce waste, strive to reuse products and items as many times as possible before throwing them.

4-Use renewable energy sources.
Consider employing renewable energy to power your home to lessen your carbon footprint. This can also be accomplished by replacing your gas powered vehicle with an electric vehicle.
